Overview: Itanhangá Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland layout in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, set in a valley beneath Pedra da Gávea and beside the city's tropical landscape. Stanley Thompson's routing uses tight, tree-lined fairways, ponds and streams, with five short par threes and demanding late par fives. Top100 Golf Courses lists the main course at 6,178 yards from the back tees and par 72.
History: The club was founded in 1933, and the initial nine holes were completed in 1935 after Stanley Thompson was commissioned to build a new Rio course. Itanhangá later developed into a 27-hole golf complex. In 2018 the club began a renovation of the golf course, with Agustín Pizá overseeing work that included new USGA-specification greens and a reordering of holes 11 to 14 for safety.
Did You Know? Itanhangá hosted the 2000 Brazil Rio de Janeiro 500 Years Open on the European Tour and the 2009 Brasil Cup on the LPGA schedule. Its 2018 renovation also created back-to-back par fives at the 11th and 12th on the current routing.
