Overview: The Purbeck course is the 18-hole championship routing at a club with 27 holes in total. It crosses heathland above the Dorset coast, where gorse, heather and open slopes create a natural boundary around the fairways. The par-70 course measures 6,295 yards, but its appeal is not based on length alone: uneven ground, exposed approaches and the changing lie of the land invite careful placement through the round.
History: Golf at the Isle of Purbeck dates to 1892, when the club began with a nine-hole course. The property later grew to include the Purbeck 18 and the separate Dene nine, creating today’s 27-hole facility. The course lies within a nature reserve, so its design and maintenance sit alongside a landscape valued for rare plants and birdlife. The stored routing here refers specifically to Purbeck, not the whole club.
Did You Know? The 18-hole Purbeck scorecard includes names drawn from the surrounding landscape, including Old Harry at the sixth. The club’s official history also records a connection with Enid Blyton and Dr Darrell-Waters, former owners involved in extending the property. Their presence is part of the club’s story, while the course remains defined by its heathland ground and elevated position above the coast.
