Overview: Isla Canela Links occupies open ground beside the Guadiana in Ayamonte, Huelva, close to the river mouth and the Portuguese Algarve. The 18-hole, par 72 layout is essentially level and easy to walk, but its calm topography does not make it simple. Wind off the estuary, natural marshes, dune edges, large bunkers and subtly undulating greens give the course its identity. The generous spaces invite a confident line from the tee, then the approach asks for a more precise decision as the hazards and putting surfaces begin to matter. The setting changes with the breeze and light: one round can reward distance and patience, while another puts a premium on controlling trajectory and choosing safe portions of the fairway. The current operator describes the renovated course as more than 6,600 metres; the directory yardage uses the published 6,540-metre back-tee card.
History: The course opened for play in 2007 as Costa Esuri West, with the design credited to José Canales. It was subsequently known as Valle Guadiana Links before becoming part of Isla Canela’s golf operation in 2020. That sequence matters because older guidebooks and search listings can use the former names even when describing the same routing. The operator now presents Isla Canela Links as one of two 18-hole courses in the resort area and highlights a recent redesign, while the federation card and contemporary ranking material retain the original 2007 design context and the 6,540-metre back-tee specification.
Did You Know? The course’s strongest visual relationship is with the Guadiana rather than with the open Atlantic: the routing follows the river landscape on the Spanish side, with views towards its mouth and the Algarve beyond. Almost half of the holes bring water into the strategic picture, while the flat terrain leaves the wind and the shape of the greens to provide much of the movement.
