Overview: Ironwood Golf Course is a city-owned 18-hole public course in Gainesville, designed by David Wallace and later renovated under Michael Beebe. The current orange-tee reference measures 6,607 yards at par 72, with century-old pines, lakes, contoured fairways and strategically placed bunkers defining the parkland setting. The city describes it as a championship course with four main tee positions.
History: The front nine was constructed in 1962 and the back nine followed in 1968, with the full course later associated with the 1964 opening date used in current course records. Gainesville acquired Ironwood in 1992 to preserve the facility and its open space. A substantial 2010 renovation renewed greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation and drainage, and the city is continuing reconstruction work in the current operating period.
Did You Know? Ironwood is recognized within the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System, an environmental distinction that fits the course's mature-pine and lake setting. Its tournament calendar has also included more than 50 events in a year, giving the municipal course a substantial competitive role in Gainesville.
