Overview: Ironwood Country Club’s South Course is a private desert layout in Palm Desert, with mountain views, strategic water and vegetation framed by the Coachella Valley’s dry climate. The original design is credited to Desmond Muirhead, with Ted Robinson involved in the early evolution and later work by John Fought. The South Course is par 72 and reaches 7,274 yards from the longest tees.
History: Ironwood has been a Palm Desert club since 1973, and the South Course was laid out by Muirhead in 1974 in consultation with Arnold Palmer. Ted Robinson subsequently redesigned the course, while John Fought’s strategic updates helped modernize the playing lines without losing the original desert character.
Did You Know? The club’s South Course has been used as a U.S. Open qualifying venue, a notable test for a private desert course whose identity is built around strategy rather than simply length.
