Overview: Irondequoit Country Club is a private Donald Ross course in Pittsford, New York, on 130 acres of rolling suburban ground. Its par-72 layout uses hills, sidehill lies, and changing elevation to make a 6,702-yard card feel more varied than the distance suggests. The course is a compact Rochester-area example of Ross’s terrain-first approach.
History: The club was formed by twelve founders in 1916, who purchased land on East Avenue and engaged Donald Ross to lay out the original golf course. Ross began with a nine-hole tract of about 3,100 yards, played twice to make a full day of golf, and built challenge through the hilly ground rather than pure length.
Did You Know? The original nine contained three par-3s, three par-4s, and three par-5s. That balanced nine-hole structure is documented in the club history and shows how Ross created variety before the modern 18-hole course became the standard.
