Overview: Hyde Park Golf Club is Jacksonville's oldest public course, a Donald Ross layout that has occupied 129 acres since 1925. The course is walkable and compact by modern standards, with mature trees, traditional green contours and a 6,468-yard blue-tee routing at par 72. An AM radio tower near the property is one of the unusual visual markers in this west Jacksonville setting.
History: Hyde Park's history includes mid-century appearances by Byron Nelson, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Babe Zaharias, Patty Berg, Louise Suggs and Mickey Wright. The 1947 Jacksonville Open supplied its most memorable anecdote, when Hogan made an 11 on the sixth hole, a 151-yard par three. The current owners, who took over in 2016, have focused on restoring the course's long public-golf character.
Did You Know? The sixth hole's Hogan story is not a myth about a missed fairway: Hyde Park's own historical account says the 1947 champion made an 11 on a short par three. It is a striking reminder that even the finest players can be unsettled by a single hole.
