Overview: Hyannisport Club is a private coastal course on Cape Cod, set between upland ground, Hall’s Creek marsh and Nantucket Sound. The 6,348-yard, par 71 layout is shaped by wind and water rather than by length alone. Donald Ross’s work is visible in the strategic green sites and the way the routing meets the marsh at several stages, while the seaside setting keeps every club choice sensitive to weather. It is a compact, character-rich course whose challenge grows when the wind comes off the Sound.
History: The club was established in 1897, when John Reid created an original six-hole layout for the summer community. Alex Findlay laid out a more formal nine-hole course in 1902. The major early expansion came in 1913, when Donald Ross extended Hyannisport to 18 holes; Ross later prepared a broader redesign plan in 1930 that was implemented in 1936. Ron Forse and the club have continued a phased restoration, using historic plans and imagery to recover strategic details without erasing the course’s long evolution.
Did You Know? Hyannisport is closely associated with the Kennedy family because the club sits near the Kennedy compound and John F. Kennedy played there during time on Cape Cod. The course also hosted the Massachusetts Open in 1958 and 1959. Those links to presidential history and competitive golf sit alongside the more enduring story of a wind-exposed Ross course beside a tidal marsh.
