Overview: Huntington Country Club is a private 18-hole Devereux Emmet course on Long Island’s North Shore. The current scorecard measures 6,432 yards at par 70, while the open coastal setting, natural mounds and sloping valleys give the layout a links-influenced character. Wind and changing lies can matter as much as the nominal yardage, and the course’s strategic interest comes from how Emmet used the existing ground rather than flattening it into a uniform parkland sequence.
History: The club was established in 1910 when a group of local and national industrialists acquired roughly 144 acres for a golf and recreation project. Devereux Emmet was engaged to design and oversee construction of the 18-hole course. The club’s own history records that Emmet worried later committees might make ill-advised changes, and a 2013 master plan sought to restore the course to its original open and windswept landscape. That restoration work helps explain why the present routing is still described through its original architectural ideas.
Did You Know? Huntington’s seventh hole is Emmet’s adaptation of the Road Hole at St. Andrews. The reference is not a literal copy, but a strategic echo of the famous Scottish hole, translated into the Long Island landscape. It is a concise example of how Emmet brought links-era ideas into a course shaped by local mounds, valleys, trees and coastal exposure.
