Overview: Howick Golf Club occupies the Musick Point peninsula at Bucklands Beach, on Auckland’s eastern edge. The current scorecard lists an 18-hole par 70 course measuring 5,506 metres from the blue tees. Many holes sit on or near the peninsula’s cliff tops, creating broad views across the Hauraki Gulf toward Rangitoto, the North Shore and the Waitemata Harbour. The visual scale is expansive, but the layout remains a compact, shot-making course where wind and position matter.
History: Howick Golf Club began in 1934 with a nine-hole course at Shelly Park. After a wartime recess and a further eighteen-hole course near Litten Road, the club moved to Musick Point in the early 1950s. The first game on the peninsula was played on 30 October 1954, after members cleared scrub, planted grass and shaped the site with extensive volunteer labour.
Did You Know? The Musick Point setting can make the wind behave in surprising ways. The club notes that air moving over the peninsula cliffs may be calm at ground level while stronger higher air is visible in the treetops. That contrast turns the surrounding landscape into a useful part of reading the shot, not just a scenic backdrop.
