Overview: Houston Country Club is a private parkland course in the Tanglewood area, with a history that reaches back to the first generation of organised golf in Houston. The current course was designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened at its present location in 1957. Its character is shaped by tree-lined corridors, carefully managed fairway angles and the softer, strategic ground of a mature city property rather than a resort-scale site. The club’s course is not presented as a public daily-fee experience, but its historical importance and tournament record make it a useful anchor for understanding Houston golf.
History: The club was founded in 1908 at the site now occupied by Gus Wortham Golf Course. It moved to the Tanglewood location after Jones assessed the property in 1955, and the new course opened in 1957. Coore & Crenshaw redesigned the course in 1988, preserving the club’s established identity while updating its strategic and agronomic details. Houston Country Club has hosted multiple Texas State Amateur and Women’s Texas Golf Association championships, as well as the Houston Invitational, so its history is both local and competitive.
Did You Know? The club’s earliest home is now Gus Wortham Park Golf Course, creating a direct geographic link between Houston’s first club era and a modern city course. Houston Country Club also helped establish the Texas Golf Association, and its early Houston Invitational drew Francis Ouimet in 1922 and Doug Ford in 1949. That combination of old ground and documented competition gives the current course a rare continuity.
