Overview: The Hotchkiss School Golf Course is a nine-hole Seth Raynor design that circles the Hotchkiss campus in Lakeville, Connecticut. The official school page lists 3,043 yards and par 35. It is a small course in physical scale but not in architectural ambition: the routing moves through the campus landscape with views toward Lake Wononscopomuc and the Berkshire-Taconic mountains, while Raynor's disciplined approach to green sites gives the holes a clear strategic backbone. The compact format makes the relationship between tee shot, approach and putting surface unusually easy to read. Every hole can be studied as a complete design idea.
History: Raynor designed the course in 1924. Charles Banks, then an English teacher at Hotchkiss, became close to Raynor and developed his own interest in course architecture through that relationship. After Raynor's death in 1926, Banks completed unfinished Raynor work and returned to Hotchkiss in the 1930s to reconfigure several holes. That link gives the course an unusual place in American golf history: it is both a school facility and a surviving record of the Raynor-Banks design partnership. The school has continued to maintain the course as part of campus life, and its official history remains unusually specific about the designers, date, par and length.
Did You Know? Hotchkiss has appeared on several national lists of notable nine-hole courses, including Golf World’s 2010 selection of America’s 25 best nine-hole layouts. Its 3,043-yard length is modest, but its Raynor lineage gives the course architectural importance far beyond its footprint.
