Overview: Slick Rock is the original Horseshoe Bay course and the most recognisable visual experience in the resort’s Texas Triangle. Robert Trent Jones, Sr. routed the 18-hole, par-72 layout through classic Hill Country terrain, where rock, native trees, water and elevation changes create a course that is scenic without becoming decorative. It measures 6,867 yards from the championship tees and carries more than seventy bunkers and twelve water hazards in the resort’s current description. The signature moment is the “Million Dollar Hole,” a route across a 35-foot waterfall that gives the round a memorable visual centre. Away from that hole, the course still asks for careful club selection, especially on the uphill approach to the closing stretch.
History: Horseshoe Bay identifies Slick Rock as its original course, opening in 1972. It later became one of the three Robert Trent Jones, Sr. layouts that define the resort’s Texas Triangle, alongside Apple Rock and Ram Rock. The course has also helped revive the Texas State Open and has hosted professional shootouts, giving the scenic resort routing a competitive history as well as a strong visitor identity. The current operator continues to present it as a full championship course, not a short companion layout.
Did You Know? The resort’s “Million Dollar Hole” is a par-three crossing associated with a 35-foot waterfall, but the less famous 18th is strategic in a quieter way: it is a tight par four with fairway bunkers on both sides and a demanding approach. Slick Rock therefore finishes with a decision rather than a postcard alone. A golfer who has spent the day admiring the scenery still has to pick a sensible line and trust the yardage on the final hole.
