Overview: Hope Valley is a Donald Ross course in Durham, North Carolina, shaped through wooded parkland and rolling ground. The current Ross tees total 6,720 yards at par 70, with a routing that uses elevation, tree lines and sloping green sites to create variety. It remains a classic Golden Age course, but its later work is part of the present character.
History: The club was founded in 1926 and the course was built during 1926–27. Donald Ross provided the original design, while Perry Maxwell made alterations in 1937–38. The official club tour and North Carolina preservation record together document a course whose present identity rests on both the Ross foundation and Maxwell’s later changes.
Did You Know? Ben Hogan selected Hope Valley’s 11th hole as his favorite hole on the course. The club’s official tour preserves that detail, adding a personal note from one of golf’s great ball strikers to the architectural history.
