Overview: The listing for Holyhead Golf Club is 6090 yards. The layout combines heathland textures with the exposed character of an island setting, where wind can change the value of a safe-looking line and firm ground can reward a thoughtful running shot. It is a compact, varied test rather than a long modern championship course: positioning, trajectory and the ability to accept an uneven lie matter as much as raw distance. The coastal atmosphere is close at hand, but the course also has enough inland vegetation and contour to keep the visual rhythm moving throughout the round.
History: James Braid visited Holyhead in 1911 and advised on the development of the course. A temporary 14-hole layout entered play in June 1912, and the full 18-hole course followed two years later as the club consolidated its ground and routing. That sequence explains why the club’s 1912 date refers to its early playing history while the completed course developed soon afterwards. Holyhead has retained the character of a local links-and-heathland course, with later maintenance working around the original terrain rather than replacing its identity.
Did You Know? Holyhead’s first playing layout had only 14 holes. The final four were added two years later, a reminder that many historic British courses grew in stages as land, funds and the practical needs of the club allowed.
