Overview: Hollywood Golf Club in Deal occupies a sandy coastal setting less than a mile from the Atlantic Ocean. The present 18-hole layout stretches to 7,040 yards at par 71 and is associated with Walter J. Travis, whose design work established the course’s strategic character. Extensive bunkering, gently changing ground and the influence of the nearby shore give the property a classic New Jersey feel without turning it into a formal links course. The holes reward controlled lines into the greens, and the course’s mature setting allows the architecture to remain the central visual feature.
History: The club was organized in 1898 by a group of New York summer residents who had taken up golf near the Jersey Shore. After leaving an earlier site, Hollywood moved to the present George Young property in 1912. Golf was established there by 1913, and Walter Travis was then hired to rework the layout with Frank B. Barrett. His 1917 design established the existing greens, bunkering and hazards, with an emphasis on accuracy rather than simply length. Tom Doak and Renaissance Golf Design later restored the course in 2014, returning attention to the intent of the Travis work.
Did You Know? Three holes from the former Deal Golf Club property became part of Hollywood’s present routing: the old fourth, fifth and sixth are now Hollywood’s 16th, 14th and 15th. The club’s history therefore includes a small piece of the neighboring course as well as its own Travis design.
