Overview: The Ocean Course at Hōkūala is an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus design in Lihue, Kauaʻi, with a coastal routing that moves between tropical inland vegetation and the Pacific. Nicklaus Design describes a layout assembled from former Kiele and Mokihana holes, while the current course page highlights a long stretch of oceanfront golf and the effect of wind and exposed shoreline.
History: Nicklaus Design lists the course as open in 1988. The current routing is not simply an unchanged historic layout: the same page records an extensive upgrade to the back nine, including one new ocean hole, and the operator says the course has been completely renovated. That distinction keeps the original opening date separate from the present configuration.
Did You Know? The 16th is presented by the course as a drivable par 4. Jack Nicklaus describes the hole as a decision between trying to reach the green through the slot and choosing a safer hybrid or long-iron layup before a short approach.
