Overview: Hokkaido Classic Golf Club offers a visually striking forest routing on Japan's northern island. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the parkland course is defined by its dramatic contrast between lush fairways, dense white birch forests, and expansive water hazards. The design features severe green undulations and rugged bunkering, creating a high-stakes championship test in a serene wilderness setting.
History: Opened in 1991, the club was envisioned as a premier international destination that would showcase the natural beauty of Hokkaido. Nicklaus spent considerable time on site during construction, ensuring the routing maximized the scenic vistas of the surrounding mountain ranges and integrated seamlessly with the local waterways.
Did You Know? The course was built using bentgrass from tee to green, a rarity in Japan at the time of its opening. This choice was made to suit the cooler northern climate of Hokkaido, producing firm, fast conditions reminiscent of traditional North American designs.
