Overview: Hilo Municipal Golf Course is a public Big Island layout in the wet, green landscape of east Hawaii. Its parkland routing uses mature vegetation, rolling ground and the island’s humid trade-wind climate to create a local course with a distinctly different feel from the dry Kona coast. The blue tees are listed at 6,324 yards and par 71.
History: Hilo Municipal opened in 1951 and is associated with architect Willard Wilkinson. The course remains a county facility, and the county describes it as one of the island’s public recreational resources. Later reports document renovation and maintenance work rather than a wholesale replacement of the historic routing.
Did You Know? Hilo’s climate is part of the architecture of the round. The east side receives far more rain than the Kona coast, so vegetation, turf response and playing conditions can change substantially across the same island.
