Overview: The Manakin Course at Hermitage Country Club occupies broad, wooded ground in Manakin Sabot outside Richmond, Virginia. Ed Ault's routing uses mature trees, natural lowland and shifting lies to create a traditional parkland test, while the later Keith Foster work forms part of the course's current architectural record. The course is measured rather than theatrical, with approach angles and green placement carrying much of the strategy.
History: Hermitage's modern Manakin golf course was originally designed by Ed Ault in 1973. Keith Foster renovated the Manakin in 2002, while the club itself traces its history to a nine-hole course begun on Broad Street in 1900 before the move to the present property.
Did You Know? Hermitage is a 36-hole club whose second routing is the Sabot Course. Arthur Hills renovated the Sabot in 2000, so the two courses preserve different chapters of the club's architectural development.
