Overview: Hermanus East is the original 1–18 routing at Hermanus Golf Club, set between the town, the Fernkloof slopes and the Cape South Coast. The course combines tree-lined fairways with grassy mounds, bunkers, rocky water features and views toward the mountains and bay. It is the most direct expression of the club’s older layout, but modern tee options let the same holes play at very different levels of difficulty.
History: Hermanus Golf Club was established in 1907 and its course was originally designed by Bob Grimsdell. Peter Matkovich later led major upgrades, and in 2006 the club added nine holes near a residential development, turning the facility from 18 to 27 holes. The East course remains the 1–18 loop in the club’s current routing system.
Did You Know? Hermanus offers three distinct 18-hole combinations from a 27-hole facility. That means the club can change the character of a round without changing its address, moving from the familiar East loop to combinations that bring different greens and landscape angles into play.
