Overview: Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska is a championship parkland course built over rolling former farmland. Robert Trent Jones Sr. shaped a broad, demanding layout in which long carries, deep bunkering, broad fairways, and several lakes place a premium on decision-making. From the back tees it stretches to 7,678 yards and plays as a serious examination of trajectory and position. The course can look open from the tee, yet its greens and approach angles leave little room for a casual second shot.
History: Robert Bruce Harris first surveyed the property before Robert Trent Jones Sr. took over the design and transformed the dairy land into a course that opened in 1962. Hazeltine quickly entered the championship calendar, hosting the 1966 U.S. Women's Open, the 1970 and 1991 U.S. Opens, and later the 2002 U.S. Amateur and 2016 Ryder Cup. Rees Jones has led major reconstruction work, updating the course for modern championship demands while retaining its original identity.
Did You Know? The club takes its name from nearby Lake Hazeltine, and the course has an unusually concentrated championship record. It is one of the rare American venues to have hosted both the U.S. Open and the Ryder Cup, with the 2016 Ryder Cup adding a team-match chapter to a property already known for major stroke-play tests.
