Overview: Hayling Golf Club is an 18-hole links on Sinah Common at the south-west end of Hayling Island. The course sits within a coastal Site of Special Scientific Interest, with sandy ground, dunes, changing wind and views across the Solent toward the Isle of Wight. The official scorecard lists a par of 71, while the back tees measure 6,531 yards.
History: The club was founded in 1883 by the Sandeman family, with the first nine holes laid out by Joseph Lloyd. Tom Dunn extended the course on Sinah Common in 1884. J.H. Taylor made important revisions in 1905, Harry Colt was consulted in 1919, and Tom Simpson rebuilt key parts from 1931, including new and reshaped holes. Simpson later returned to repair wartime damage.
Did You Know? Hayling hosted an exhibition match between Harry Vardon and James Braid in 1902. The club has also staged the English Women’s Amateur Championship on four occasions, in 1936, 1948, 1966 and 1983, adding a substantial competitive chapter to this coastal course’s history.
