Overview: Hawktree Golf Club is a public course north of Bismarck, North Dakota, where Jim Engh uses prairie grasses, elevation changes, lakes and Burnt Creek to create a links-influenced modern routing. Wind is a constant design factor, while dark coal-slag bunkers give the course a distinctive visual signature.
History: Hawktree opened in 2000 as a Jim Engh design and quickly appeared on new-course and state-course lists. The layout was built to make the high-plains landscape part of the strategy, with multiple tees giving a range of playing lines.
Did You Know? Burnt Creek is in play on eight holes and three lakes add further water decisions. Engh's use of black coal slag in the bunkers is one of the course's most recognizable architectural details.
