Overview: Hawk’s Eye is a bold 18-hole course in Bellaire’s rolling northern Michigan terrain, now part of the Shanty Creek resort collection. John Robinson’s design uses elevation, native woodland and water to create a course that changes mood from hole to hole. The championship tees stretch to 7,011 yards at par 72, while the multiple shorter options make the layout more adaptable than that number suggests. Nine holes bring water into play, and the combination of forced carries, large bunkering and shifting approach angles rewards players who choose position before trying to overpower the property.
History: The course opened in 2004 and quickly became one of the most visible new layouts in the Bellaire market. Golf Association of Michigan coverage describes Robinson’s use of the natural terrain and the course’s rise within Michigan public-course rankings. Shanty Creek acquired Hawk’s Eye in 2021, adding it to a collection that already included The Legend, Cedar River, Schuss Mountain and Summit. That acquisition transformed the area into a particularly dense golf destination, with five 18-hole courses within the resort’s wider network.
Did You Know? Hawk’s Eye’s water is not concentrated in one signature hole. The course’s own description notes that water hazards appear on nine of the eighteen holes, so the strategic question keeps returning throughout the round.
