Overview: Hart Ranch Golf Course is a public Patrick Wyss design in the foothills of the Black Hills near Rapid City. The 18-hole course uses ponderosa pine, open grassland, water and the rising ground at the edge of the hills to create a varied parkland round. It plays to par 72 and 6,832 yards from the longest directory markers, with multiple tee positions that make the layout more approachable than the championship number suggests. The scenery is a major part of the experience, but the course also asks for careful placement as fairways move between open views and tighter tree-lined corridors.
History: Hart Ranch takes its name from John Harrison Hart, a Black Hills rancher whose land and story remain part of the property's identity. The golf facility opened in 1984, and the course became a full 18-hole layout in 1995. Patrick Wyss shaped the design around the foothill terrain, allowing the setting to provide elevation, views and natural separation between holes. Over time Hart Ranch has become a major public golf destination in the Rapid City area and a regular host for South Dakota state championship events.
Did You Know? The Hart Ranch name reaches back to the Black Hills Gold Rush era. John Harrison Hart arrived in the region in the 1880s and built a ranching and freight business, so the modern golf property carries a direct link to the working history of the Black Hills rather than only a scenic name.
