Overview: Harewood’s Woodlands Course is an 18-hole parkland layout north-west of Christchurch, with the Southern Alps and Port Hills visible beyond the fairways. The course is listed at par 72 and roughly 6,448 metres from the back tees. Its fairways can look flat from the clubhouse, but the official course description stresses deceptive undulation, strong drainage and greens that remain an important part of the test throughout the year.
History: Harewood was formed in 1923, but the club’s modern Woodlands story began when a second hundred acres was acquired and a course designed by J.D. Harris opened in 1967. After the club’s former 36-hole arrangement was reduced, Turner Macpherson Golf Design undertook a substantial 2012 redevelopment. Eighteen new greens and eighteen new tee boxes helped turn the remaining course into the present Woodlands routing.
Did You Know? Harewood’s current eighteen is the result of a remarkable consolidation: the club describes the change as turning thirty-six fine holes into eighteen exceptional ones. That is why the course combines the history of an older club with a comparatively modern playing surface and a routing shaped by large-scale reinvestment.
