Overview: Hardscrabble Country Club is a Perry Maxwell parkland course in Fort Smith, built across the former Hardscrabble Farm. The current profile lists 6,783 yards and par 70. Mature trees, rolling ground and traditional green complexes give the course a classic Maxwell character, while the site retains a sense of the orchard and open land that preceded the club. It is a historic private course whose appeal comes from strategic angles, thoughtful shaping and a strong connection to the landscape.
History: Hardscrabble's official history dates the course to 1926 and describes the property as a former orchard. The Perry Maxwell Archive records work on the second nine in May 1927, which explains why some references use 1927 when discussing the complete 18-hole course. Jay and Carter Morrish renovated the layout in 1998. The club also hosted the Hardscrabble Open from 1945 through 1953, including official LPGA Tour events from 1948 to 1950.
Did You Know? Hardscrabble's tournament history is sometimes mentioned in connection with the early story of women's professional golf. The club's own account links its women's events and the Fort Smith discussions to a possible LPGA origin story, but the careful version is that Hardscrabble was an important early venue, not the sole birthplace of the organization.
