Overview: Hakonekohan Golf Course uses its mountain setting to split the round. The high ground around Sengokuhara makes the outward nine the more dramatic half, with views toward Lake Ashi, Owakudani and the Hakone uplands. The inward nine is quieter and more level, but its forest boundaries and subtle contours still demand a precise line. The course measures 6,488 yards at par 72.
History: Ching-Shui Chen's 1964 design established Hakonekohan's present identity. Hakonekohan opened in 1964 to a design by Ching-Shui Chen. The club's current course page still divides the experience into a more elevated, wooded outward nine and a flatter inward nine. That contrast is the central idea of the routing, moving from panoramic mountain golf to a closer, more controlled finish.
Did You Know? The fifth tee is the highest point of the outward nine. From there the visual field opens across Lake Ashi, Owakudani and Sengokuhara, making the hole memorable before the first shot is struck. Lake Ashi and Owakudani are not just nearby attractions; the club's presentation uses their visibility to explain the changing mood between the two nines.
