Overview: Shadow Dunes is a 6,428-yard, par-70 course shaped around sand dunes and native coastal vegetation. It is shorter than many Mission Hills layouts, but the large, undulating greens can produce long and awkward putts when the ball is not placed thoughtfully. Boardwalks cross sandy ground, palm trees and beach plants frame the holes, and close green-to-tee connections make the course especially walkable for a resort routing.
History: Brian Curley placed Shadow Dunes in the Haikou group, where the beach and Caribbean brief gives it a separate identity. Its architectural brief is distinct from the volcanic quarry and tournament courses, using a beach landscape and Caribbean-influenced comfort stations to create a lighter resort mood. The official course page does not give an exact opening year.
Did You Know? The course is not simply a beach course with sand everywhere. Mission Hills describes it as a course that brings the world of sand into the city, using dunes and local plants while asking players to control the short game. Shell tee markers and boardwalks over the dunes make the landscape legible from the first tee.
