Overview: Sandbelt Trails is Mission Hills Haikou's Australian-inspired routing. At 7,297 yards and par 72, it combines broad fairways with bunker faces that rise sharply above the turf, native grasses and eucalyptus trees. The course takes cues from Royal Melbourne, Kingston Heath and the Metropolitan Club, but adapts that vocabulary to a gently rolling Hainan site. Green approaches are often open and running, so players can choose between aerial shots and controlled ground game.
History: Brian Curley placed Sandbelt Trails within the ten-course Haikou commission. The resort has used the routing for junior and member events, including the Mission Hills tournament programmes. A separate opening year is not published in the official course material, so the history is focused on the verified design lineage and current use.
Did You Know? The greens are surrounded directly by fairway cut rather than a conventional rough collar, according to Mission Hills. That construction choice changes the recovery options around the putting surfaces and helps the course feel more like a firm Australian Sandbelt layout. Eucalyptus planting reinforces the reference without pretending that Hainan is Melbourne.
