Overview: Lava Fields is the expansive, open counterpart to Blackstone in the Mission Hills Haikou collection. The par-72 course measures 7,475 yards and uses large areas of black rock, sand and irregular turf edges to create a landscape unlike ordinary resort parkland. With less tree cover than the tournament course, it feels exposed and spacious. Broad fairways offer more than one angle into the greens, but waste bunkers and lava outcrops make aggressive carries meaningful.
History: Brian Curley and the Schmidt-Curley team included Lava Fields in their ten-course Haikou work. Mission Hills describes the layout as capable of hosting significant events, which reflects its length and the scale of the playing ground. A course-specific opening year is not supplied by the official material.
Did You Know? The course's black rock and sand dominate the visual field so strongly that the design reads almost like a geological study. Mission Hills says the course has fewer trees and a more expansive feel than the tournament layout, while still using closely mown chipping areas and wild waste bunkers.
