Overview: Hagley Golf Club is a historic 18-hole parkland course in Christchurch’s Hagley Park, only a short walk from the central city. The club lists the course at par 72 and 5,676 metres from the white tees. Its appeal is unusual for a city course: the holes sit inside a large public green space, with the Botanic Gardens and mature parkland creating a calm setting while the compact routing still demands accurate iron play and a reliable short game.
History: Golf has been played on Hagley Park since the 1870s, and the club identifies 1873 as its establishment year. The course hosted the 1893 New Zealand Championship, an early marker of Christchurch’s place in the country’s golfing story. Play has continued through the park’s long civic history, leaving Hagley with a stronger sense of continuity than most urban courses can claim.
Did You Know? Hagley’s location makes it possible to pair a genuine round of golf with Christchurch’s Botanic Gardens and central-city landmarks without a long transfer between them. The course is therefore part of the city’s historic park landscape as much as it is a golf venue, an unusual combination for an eighteen-hole layout.
