Overview: Hadley Wood is a Golden Age parkland course in north London, arranged across the former Beech Hill Park estate. The routing moves through gently rolling woodland and open grassland, with the Georgian clubhouse and old estate landscape providing a strong sense of place. Alister MacKenzie’s influence appears in the strategic placement of hazards, raised and multi-level greens, and the way each hole presents more than one route to a sound result.
History: Local residents purchased the estate in 1921 and formally established the club a year later. MacKenzie laid out the 18-hole course and attended its opening in May 1922, which featured an exhibition match involving Harry Vardon, Ted Ray and George Duncan. Members later purchased the freehold, and work from 2023 to 2025 renewed bunkers, tees, drainage and tree management while respecting the original design.
Did You Know? The clubhouse is Beech Hill Park Mansion, a Georgian building constructed in 1781. Before golf arrived, the surrounding land formed part of the royal hunting ground of Enfield Chase, so the course’s parkland setting has a much older history than its 1922 golf layout.
