It occupies the same remarkable volcanic landscape as Gullane’s other courses, with firm turf, heather, dunes and broad views over the Firth of Forth. The ground rises and falls naturally, creating elevated tees, angled fairways and greens that can be attacked only after the player has understood the lie. Wind is a constant design partner, but the course also rewards a running approach and careful use of slopes when the ground is firm.
History: Gullane No. 2 was designed by Willie Park Jr. and entered the club’s history in 1898. Park’s routing uses the natural hill and links land to give the course a strong sense of movement, with holes changing direction and elevation rather than repeating one template. The course remains recognisably traditional East Lothian golf: the hazards are integrated into the land, the greens are approached from different angles and the surrounding view is part of the architectural experience.
Did You Know? From Gullane’s higher ground, the view reaches across the Firth of Forth towards the Bass Rock and the coast of Fife. The panorama is not merely a backdrop: it makes the exposed nature of the links and the direction of the wind especially easy to read.
