Overview: Gulf Stream Golf Club is a private coastal course in the Town of Gulf Stream, set between the Atlantic and the Intracoastal landscape north of Delray Beach. Donald Ross planned the course, whose current scorecard listing is par 72 and 6,709 yards. The setting is unusually narrow and exposed, so wind, vegetation and the relationship between the two waterways influence the round as much as the scorecard length. Traditional parkland movement is filtered through a distinctly South Florida shoreline environment.
History: Founding members established Gulf Stream Golf Club in March 1924, and the club officially opened for play in 1925. Ross planned the course while Addison Mizner designed the clubhouse, making the property a collaboration between two major figures in Florida’s early resort architecture. The Town of Gulf Stream’s history also records how the golf club formed part of a larger Phipps-family development vision for the coastal community. Later maintenance and restoration have preserved the Ross foundation while responding to modern turf and drainage needs.
Did You Know? Gulf Stream’s clubhouse and course began as part of a planned winter community, but the golf property itself remains the more enduring landscape. During the Second World War the course was closed to regular club play and maintained for limited use by servicemen stationed nearby. That wartime chapter is a reminder that even a private coastal course can become part of a much wider local history.
