Overview: Gulf Harbour Country Club occupies the Whangaparaoa Peninsula north of Auckland, with fairways moving between native grasses, an inland lake and bluffs above the Hauraki Gulf. Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the 18-hole, par-72 course to make the coastline part of the strategic experience. The front nine is more open and includes the lake, while the back nine returns toward the sea and finishes among elevated views and exposed approaches.
History: Gulf Harbour was developed as a championship destination and opened in 1998. The course’s early profile was strengthened when it hosted the World Cup of Golf that year, placing the new peninsula layout in an international tournament setting almost immediately. The design has remained associated with the unusual combination of Auckland proximity, native coastal ground and long views over the gulf.
Did You Know? Several holes carry Māori names that describe their character. The 7th is Te Tahuna, associated with a place where a bird lands, while the 17th is Taniwha, a supernatural being. The names give the course a local language and cultural layer beyond its Robert Trent Jones design vocabulary.
