Overview: Green Mountain National Golf Course is a public 18-hole course in Killington administered and maintained by the town. Gene Bates’ design uses the Green Mountain setting as a central part of the round, with elevation changes, wooded corridors and higher ground that opens to long views. The 6,589-yard, par-71 layout has a useful mix of shorter par fours, par threes and longer approaches, so its challenge is not based on length alone. The course’s municipal ownership gives the mountain setting a practical, everyday character.
History: Green Mountain National opened in 1996 after more than five years of planning and construction. It was developed as Vermont’s first 18-hole municipally owned golf course, and the Town of Killington continues to administer and maintain the facility. The original public mission remains visible in the range of tees, practice facilities and clubhouse services that support the main course.
Did You Know? The town’s course information lists five sets of tees for the 18-hole layout. Golf Digest also notes that the back nine reaches the highest points of the property, which helps explain why the course’s mountain views become more pronounced as the round progresses.
