Overview: Great Northern, located in Kerteminde on the Danish island of Funen, is a modern parkland and stadium course designed by the Nicklaus Design firm. Set within a Nordic landscape, the course is routed with water features, bold mounding, and sandbelt-style bunkers. The layout features large, multi-tiered greens and strategically placed hazards that demand precise distance control and shot-making in the face of local wind conditions.
History: Opened in 2017, Great Northern was envisioned by Danish businessman Thomas Kirk Kristiansen, whose family owns the LEGO Group, with the goal of creating a championship venue in Denmark. The construction involved shaping lakes, moving over a million cubic meters of earth to create elevation changes, and constructing a spa, hotel, and clubhouse that blends modern Danish design with the surrounding hills.
Did You Know? The clubhouse is architecturally integrated directly into the hillside, utilizing local stone, glass, and sustainable timber to minimize its visual impact on the landscape. The par-3 14th hole features an island green surrounded by a lake, requiring a mid-iron shot that is vulnerable to the swirling coastal winds from the Great Belt strait.
