Overview: Gray Plantation sits beside the Calcasieu River in Lake Charles, within the Graywood community and on Louisiana’s Audubon Golf Trail. Rocky Roquemore designed the course as a broad, water-rich championship layout, with about 60 acres of lakes, roughly 94 bunkers and a mixture of wooded corridors, open landing areas and wetland scenery. The course is listed at 7,200 yards and gives players several different visual tests: some holes open toward the water, while others use trees and bunkering to frame the preferred line. Its character comes from the balance between scale and landscape, with the natural features shaping strategy throughout the round.
History: Gray Plantation opened in 1999 as the golf component of the Graywood development on the outskirts of Lake Charles. The Rocky Roquemore design quickly became a recognised stop on the Audubon Golf Trail and was described in contemporary course coverage as a nationally ranked layout. The facility’s combination of multiple teeing areas, extensive water and tournament-style infrastructure helped establish it as one of the region’s principal golf destinations. It remains connected to the Lake Charles golf scene while retaining the wooded and river-influenced setting that defined the original project.
Did You Know? Gray Plantation’s name can sound like a reference to a single plantation property, but the course was developed as the centrepiece of Graywood, a traditional neighbourhood beside the Calcasieu River. The surrounding community and the golf course were planned together, which explains the unusually integrated residential setting.
