Overview: Goring and Streatley Golf Club sits high on the Berkshire Downs above Streatley, looking over the Goring Gap and the Thames valley. Chalk downland gives firm, fast-running fairways that drain well in winter, while woodland frames parts of the course. The white-tee card is 6,355 yards with a par of 71, with changes in level and quick greens making club choice tricky. Chalk downland is firm underfoot and quick after dry weather, while the river gap below gives the setting a strong sense of scale. Tree-lined sections interrupt the open slopes, so the course alternates between expansive views and enclosed approaches.
History: The club was founded in March 1895 after golf had been played informally in local meadows. Tom Dunn laid out the first nine holes at Field Barn Farm in Streatley. From about 1922 Harry Colt advised on rerouting and expansion to eighteen holes, and the course was extended further in the 1920s and 1930s.
Did You Know? The Goring Gap that the course overlooks is where the Thames cuts between the Chilterns and the Berkshire Downs, and the ancient Ridgeway path crosses the river nearby.
