Golspie

Overview: Golspie Golf Club is a mixed Highland course set between the foothills of Ben Bhraggie and the coast near the Dornoch Firth. Its distinctive character comes from the way the routing moves through several kinds of ground: open seaside turf, heathland and more sheltered parkland. The transitions are not cosmetic. Wind, drainage, vegetation and changing ground conditions all influence how a hole should be played, so the course asks for adjustment rather than a single fixed strategy. The current profile is 6,021 yards and par 70, with the club noting that later lengthening included the Backies and Fields becoming par fives. James Braid's influence remains central to the course's identity, while the setting supplies the broad views and exposed lines associated with Highland golf.

History: The club was founded in 1889 after the Sutherland Golfing Society had already established a local golfing tradition. A nine-hole course is recorded in the 1895 golfing literature, and a full eighteen-hole layout followed that year when the Duchess of Sutherland opened the expanded course. James Braid was later invited to improve the design, with his work in place by 1926 and forming the foundation of the modern routing. The North Sea has periodically affected the lower ground, but the club's history describes a series of measured improvements that kept the character of the course intact. In 2012 the layout was lengthened to its present 6,021-yard, par-70 configuration.
