Overview: The Schmittenhöhe Course is the premier 18-hole championship track at the prestigious Golfclub Zell am See-Kaprun-Saalbach. Designed by the legendary Donald Harradine and opened in 1983, the course is a sterner, more challenging test situated in a breathtaking Alpine valley between the Hohe Tauern mountains and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. It is a flat but demanding parkland layout characterized by narrow fairways, strategic water hazards, and subtle green breaks that require precision and careful approach play.
History: The course was the first 18-hole track established in the region, helping to spark the modern golf boom in the Austrian Alps. It was later expanded to a 36-hole complex to meet growing international demand. The Schmittenhöhe is famously associated with the professional game, having hosted numerous international tournaments; its course record of 66 is notably held by two-time Masters champion Bernhard Langer, who praised the course's strategic depth and scenic beauty.
Did You Know? The course is noted for its unique use of historic hay barns and traditional Tyrolean biotopes as natural obstacles on several of the inward holes? With its proximity to Lake Zell and the permanent snow of the Kitzsteinhorn, the Schmittenhöhe offers a high-fidelity resort experience that combines a rigorous competitive layout with some of the most iconic landscapes in Central Europe.
