Overview: Gut Lärchenhof is a parkland course in Pulheim-Stommeln, west of Cologne, designed by Jack Nicklaus as a broad, strategic meadow-style layout. The course combines generous corridors with natural areas, trees, water, and large bunker complexes, so a safe-looking line can still leave a difficult angle. The club's design notes emphasize that the par-3 holes point in all four compass directions, bringing changing wind into a scorecard that already asks for precision. The course uses a spacious setting rather than narrow corridors, but the challenge comes from the relationship between the tee line, the approach, and the multi-level green complexes. At 18 holes and par 72, Gut Lärchenhof rewards decision-making more than brute force.
History: Gut Lärchenhof opened in 1996 and remains the first and only Jack Nicklaus-designed course in Germany, according to the club. Its tournament history includes the Linde German Masters from 1998 to 2005, the Mercedes-Benz Championship from 2007 to 2009, and the BMW International Open from 2012 through 2018. Those events gave the Pulheim course a sustained place on the European professional schedule, while the original Nicklaus routing remained the centre of the property.
Did You Know? Nicklaus's design deliberately points the four par 3s toward the four cardinal directions. The idea makes the short holes a useful wind lesson: the same club selection cannot be relied on from one par 3 to the next because the course presents the air from every side.
