Overview: Golfclub Fontana is an 18-hole engineered parkland landscape at Oberwaltersdorf south of Vienna. Designed by Doug Carrick and Hans-Georg Erhardt, Its broad engineered ground and large lake create strategic width, with water deciding whether an aggressive line is worthwhile. The scorecard gives par 72 and a rear-marker distance of about 7,308 yards, giving the lake and engineered fairways room for a full tournament test. The lake, shaped ground, and large playing corridors create a visual scale that can encourage risk, especially when the safest approach is not the most direct one.
History: Fontana was developed in the mid-1990s as part of Frank Stronach’s project. Sources use both 1996 and 1997 for neighboring development and opening milestones, so this profile retains the directory’s 1996 date without inventing a disputed day. Fontana’s construction history is unusually visible in the landscape. The project transformed a former industrial property into a large golf estate, and its tournament use helped establish the course beyond the Vienna region.
Did You Know? The large lake was created through a major earthmoving project. Water is central to the design, not merely decorative. Fontana’s lake and large-scale earthworks are among the clearest clues that this is a purpose-built transformation of an industrial site.
