Overview: Golfclub Budersand Sylt is an 18-hole true links course on the southern part of Sylt, where dunes, heath, salt air and North Sea weather define the experience. The course is listed at par 72 and 6,605 yards, and was designed by golf architect and landscape gardener Rolf-Stephan Hansen. The fairways and greens occupy a sandy coastal setting with very few fixed landmarks, so wind direction, firmness and the shape of the ground can change the best line from one day to the next. The club describes the course as Germany's only true links, a style in which natural drainage can keep fairways firm and greens quick. Deep pot bunkers and exposed approaches add to the visual identity, but the main challenge is learning to use the ground and the wind instead of treating every hole as an aerial target.
History: The Budersand project began around 2004 on the site of a former military barracks area near Hörnum. The property presented an unusual restoration challenge: about 30 hectares contained roads and derelict buildings, while a further 43 hectares were protected dune landscape. Forty buildings were demolished, sewage plants and oil tanks were removed, and 10,000 square metres of damaged land were renaturalised. The golf facility opened its tees in July 2008, and the BUDERSAND hotel followed in 2009. The finished course therefore represents both a modern links design and a large-scale rehabilitation of a previously sealed and neglected coastal site.
Did You Know? The club's current course description counts 96 characteristic pot bunkers. Their deep, steep-sided form is more than a visual signature: on a windy links, a bunker can turn a safe-looking landing area into a difficult recovery and make ground-game creativity essential.
