Overview: Golf- und Land-Club Regensburg is set in the former Thiergarten landscape near Donaustauf, where woodland, gentle movement in the ground and historic parkland give the course its distinctive character. The routing is traditional and tree-led, with fairways that reward a controlled line and greens that make the quality of the approach more important than raw length. The course’s atmosphere is unusually calm for a championship layout, helped by its setting in a former princely forest.
History: The club’s roots reach back to 1966, when golf was first played on a temporary site in Regensburg. Donald Harradine laid out the first nine holes on the Thiergarten property in 1968 and expanded the course to 18 holes in 1981. Thomas Himmel then adapted the layout between 1999 and 2002, keeping the English parkland character while bringing the playing surfaces and strategy up to modern standards.
Did You Know? The land was once part of the Thiergarten connected with the princely Thurn und Taxis estate. That history explains the course’s unusual combination of mature forest, formal parkland traces and a golf layout that feels embedded rather than imposed.
