Overview: Golf de Wimereux is a windswept links on the Opal Coast, set on the site of a former racecourse facing the English Channel. The sandy plateau, coastal grasses and exposed fairways create a ground game in which wind direction and trajectory matter as much as raw length. The course is open enough to show its seaside character, but its history and mature vegetation give the routing more definition than a newly made coastal layout.
History: The Boulogne Golf Club was established at the site in 1901, when a nine-hole course was laid out inside the racecourse. After the early years, the course was rebuilt as an 18-hole layout by Major Campbell and Major Hutchinson, with the club’s history describing a Scottish model and a championship length of 5,684 metres. The course later endured the disruptions of war but retained its links identity and continued to develop as a permanent club.
Did You Know? Before golf, the present site was used for horse racing and was associated with Napoleon’s coastal military preparations. The club history also records that the golf’s natural grass, gorse, heather and broom were admired for their resemblance to the best Scottish seaside courses.
