Overview: Golf de Spérone occupies a dramatic coastal site near Bonifacio in southern Corsica, where maquis vegetation, limestone ground and the Mediterranean create the setting for an 18-hole course. Robert Trent Jones Jr. shaped the routing around the island's irregular topography and the effect of the sea wind. The course moves between inland holes framed by native vegetation and exposed coastal sections with broad views toward the Lavezzi Islands. The fairways and greens do not sit on a flat platform, so the changing lies and angles are part of the challenge. Water is most memorable at the famous sixteenth, where the strategy includes the option of playing across the sea. Spérone's appeal comes from that combination of raw coastal land, precise shot values and a setting that feels unmistakably Corsican.
History: The Domaine de Spérone was created through the vision of Jacques Dewez, who developed the wider property before the golf course was inaugurated in 1990. Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the 18-hole layout, using the terrain and marine exposure rather than imposing a conventional resort template. The project also preserved much of the existing landscape: the official history records approximately 73 hectares retained for golf and native plant species kept within the site. Irrigation uses highly treated water from the Bonifacio wastewater system, a practical part of the course's long-term relationship with its environment.
Did You Know? Spérone is the only 18-hole golf course in Corsica. That distinction is more than a regional statistic because it places the entire round within one of the island's most distinctive coastal landscapes, where maquis, limestone and sea views remain visible from many parts of the routing.
