Overview: Saint-Jean-de-Monts is a coastal links in the Vendée, arranged across a sandy substrate between maritime pine forest and the Atlantic shore. The opening nine move through the pines, while the return brings the sea and the island of Yeu into the visual field. Firm ground, exposed wind and the contrast between wooded and open holes give the course a changing rhythm, with the low-running shot and thoughtful positioning often more useful than simply hitting high and hard.
History: The course is credited to French architect Yves Bureau and the club’s current presentation dates the 18-hole layout to 1988. Its character was defined by the decision to keep two different coastal environments in one routing: protected pine corridors on one side of the property and open seaside holes on the other. That combination has helped Saint-Jean-de-Monts remain a distinctive public course in western France, rather than a generic resort layout.
Did You Know? The official course description calls it an 18-hole par-72 layout measuring 5,896 metres. The sandy base is part of the playing identity: the club notes that the course can be played with the feet kept dry, while the surrounding coast supplies a constant natural source of wind variation.
